A carved head on a step is a decoration people walk past. The same head on a skeleton torso, clawing its way up out of the grass, is the thing they stop for. At 58 inches across it is nearly five feet of lawn, which puts it in the same class as the big groundbreakers rather than among the porch props — and it needs no power, no stake in the wall and no tools to put together.
On its own a carved face is friendly. Attached to a ribcage and two long clawed arms, it stops being friendly at about ten feet of distance, which is exactly where people are when they decide whether to come up the path.
Weather-resistant materials, meant to stand through rain and wind for the season rather than come in every night. It is a static piece — nothing moves, nothing to plug in and nothing to fail on the 30th.
It assembles without tools despite the size. The whole thing goes up in one trip from the garage and comes apart the same way on the first.
Two groundbreakers on the same lawn read as a crowd only if they look alike. This one does not: bone next to pumpkin gives the eye two different things to land on, and the orange reads at night under a warm porch light exactly where the bone one disappears. Put them at different distances from the walk, never side by side at the same depth, and set this one slightly further back — the head is high enough to be seen over the first piece.
