Three stakes

A head, two hands, and the lawn does the rest

There is no body in this set, and that is the whole idea. You plant a skull and two grasping hands with grass between them, and anyone looking fills in what is underneath. It is the cheapest illusion in the yard and one of the few that gets better the further away you stand.

Spacing is the whole trick

Set the hands roughly a body's width apart and slightly ahead of the skull. Too close and it reads as three separate props; too far and the connection breaks.

Goes in with a shove

Three stakes, no tools, no power. It goes up in a minute and comes out the same way on the first, and the lawn is a lawn again.

No gloss under a light

Matte bone finish, so a path light grazes it. Shine is what tells the eye it is plastic before the shape tells it anything else.

Where it works best

Flat open lawn, ten or fifteen feet from the walk. It needs unbroken grass around it to sell the idea that something is under there — up against a flower bed or a wall, the illusion has nowhere to go. And keep the hands angled toward whoever is arriving. A hand reaching at you is a different thing from a hand reaching at the house.
