The I Scream cart with something in the freezer
A weathered blue vendor cart, striped umbrella and all, with a clown head up out of the freezer chest. The motor and sound do the work; the I Scream lettering on the side does the setup. Park it at the end of the driveway where sidewalk traffic has to pass it, plug it in, and go back inside.
Reads as a real cart from the street
Distressed blue paint, a grimy blue-and-white umbrella, a big spoked wheel and a push handle. From the sidewalk it looks like somebody parked a vintage ice cream cart on the lawn, tagline and all: Scoops to Chill Your Bones. The clown in the freezer is the punchline.
Not for the little kids, and it means it
The scare level on this one is honest. Bald pink head, orange tufts, red nose, a mouthful of teeth over a white ruffle collar. Put it where the older trick-or-treaters walk and keep the toddler lane on the other side of the porch.
Runs off a wall outlet
Plug-in 120V, so there is no battery pack to dig out of the cart at 8 p.m. One outdoor extension cord from the garage and it stays on duty until you unplug it.
Halloween night, and the November after
A group walks up to a harmless ice cream cart, the clown in the chest wakes up, the group re-routes across the neighbor's grass. Repeat until the candy runs out. On November 1 it unplugs, the umbrella and cart pack flat into the tote, and it sits on the garage shelf until next October.
