The one that didn't stay down
A full-height animated zombie in a torn work shirt, dark trousers and laced brown boots, with eyes that glow amber. He moves, so he does more than stand there while the street looks him over. Put him at the front edge of the graveyard bed, boots down in the mulch, where the headlights find him first.
The eyes do the work after dark
Amber-lit eyes set in a gray-green face with the mouth hung open. From the sidewalk at night that is what people see before they see the rest of him, and it is why he reads as awake instead of propped up.
Dressed like he had a job once
Open button-up over a gray tee, one sleeve torn off at the elbow, dark trousers, brown work boots with the laces done up. Faded and stained the way clothes actually go. He looks like a man buried in what he wore to work.
The base goes under the mulch
He stands on a flat black metal frame under the boots. Sink the frame into mulch or leaves and the boots look like they just broke the surface. Leave it showing on a lawn and it still holds him upright.
Halloween night, and the morning after
When the street fills up he is the one at the graveyard edge, eyes lit and the rest of him moving, that makes the kids stop at the curb and work out who goes first. Come November, pull the frame out of the mulch, knock the dirt off the boots and lay him flat in the garage.
