The witch who brought her own cauldron

A life-size witch in purple gauze over a black tattered robe, hands out over a black cauldron hung by chain from a tripod, red eyes lit and the pot full of green-glowing eyeballs. She is sound-activated, so she holds still until she hears someone coming up the walk, then kicks into motion and sound for whoever set her off. Plug her into the porch outlet and park her on the front lawn where the walkway bends.

The cauldron is part of the deal

Black pot on a chain, hung off a black tripod, filled with eyeballs that glow green. Most witch props leave you hunting for a cauldron the week before; this one shows up as a finished scene, and her hands are already posed over it.

Plugs into the wall

120V plug-in, so she runs off the porch outlet and one extension cord. No battery door to open with a flashlight at 8 p.m. when the line of kids is longest and she has gone quiet.

Slightly scary, and that is the right dial

Red eyes, a gap-toothed grin, long pale fingers. Enough to make a seven-year-old stop at the edge of the lawn, not enough to send a four-year-old back to the car. Nothing on her that needs a content warning. She is a front-lawn witch, not a haunted-trail one.

Halloween night, and the morning after

Around dusk she gets plugged in, and every group that comes up the walk sets her off. The small ones stop at the cauldron to stare at the eyeballs while the parents hang back by the sidewalk.
